IBPS Clerk 2026 Selection Process

The recruitment workflow for IBPS CRP CSA consists of two distinct phases:

  1. Preliminary Examination
  2. Mains Examination

Candidates must qualify in both examination tiers to secure selection for clerical positions across leading public sector banks. Notably, there is no interview process following the main examination; final selection is determined entirely by performance in the mains round.

IBPS Clerk 2026 Exam Pattern

The IBPS Clerk examination is structured into Prelims and Mains stages, both conducted in an online computer-based format. The exam structure is detailed below:

Phase-1: Preliminary Examination

The IBPS CRP CSA preliminary examination is an objective online test evaluating candidates across English language proficiency, quantitative aptitude, and reasoning ability. Comprising three sections, candidates must clear the sectional cut-offs to qualify for the mains examination.

Test-takers are allotted a strict time limit of 20 minutes per section. The composite paper carries 100 marks, with qualifying thresholds determined by IBPS based on annual difficulty levels.

Name of TestsNo. of Questions/MarksDuration
English Language30/3020 minutes
Numerical Ability35/3520 minutes
Reasoning Ability35/3520 minutes
Total100/1001 Hour

Candidates must achieve the minimum qualifying cut-off score set by IBPS in each of the three test sections. A competitive number of candidates per category will then be shortlisted for the online main examination based on operational requirements.

Phase-2: Mains Examination

Important adjustments have been introduced in the pattern for the IBPS Clerk 2026 Mains Exam. The Mains Exam will now feature 160 questions, while the total maximum marks remain unchanged at 200. Furthermore, the exam duration has been streamlined to 120 minutes, compared to the previous 160 minutes.

Name of TestsNo. of Questions/MarksDuration
Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude40/6035 minutes
English Language40/4035 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude40/5030 minutes
General/Financial Awareness40/5020 minutes
Total160/200120 minutes

Penalty for Wrong Answers: Negative marking applies to incorrect responses in both the preliminary and mains examinations. A penalty equivalent to one-fourth of the marks assigned to that specific question will be deducted for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions will attract no penalty.

Final Score Calculation for the IBPS Clerk Exam:

The final merit score for the IBPS Clerk recruitment is computed based on the following guidelines:

• Marks scored in the preliminary examination (Phase 1) are qualifying in nature and will not contribute to the final merit ranking.

• Candidates must successfully clear Phase 2 to be considered for inclusion in the final merit list.

• The normalized aggregate score out of 100 forms the basis of category-wise merit lists, from which top-ranking candidates are selected.
