SSC Stenographer 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must fulfill specific eligibility criteria to successfully qualify for the SSC Stenographer 2026 recruitment. The core parameters are outlined below:

Educational Qualification (as on 01/08/2026)

Candidates must have successfully passed the 12th standard (HSC) or an equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University. Successful candidates must present valid educational certificates during the document verification stage of the SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam.

Age Limit (as on 01/08/2026)

SSC Stenographer Grade C: Applicants must fall within the age bracket of 18 to 30 years to apply for the Grade C exam. Candidates must be born not earlier than 02.08.1996 and not later than 01.08.2008.

SSC Stenographer Grade D: Applicants must be between 18 and 27 years of age to be eligible for the Grade D exam. Candidates must be born not earlier than 02.08.1999 and not later than 01.08.2008.

Nationality

A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who arrived in India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanent settlement, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanent settlement in India.
Provided that candidates belonging to categories (b), (c), (d), and (e) must possess a valid certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Candidates requiring an eligibility certificate may be permitted to take the examination provisionally; however, official job offers will only be granted after the Government of India formally issues the eligibility certificate.

SSC Stenographer Application Fee 2026

The application fee for the SSC Stenographer 2026 exam is Rs. 100/- for General and OBC candidates. Female candidates, along with applicants belonging to SC, ST, PWD, and Ex-servicemen categories, are completely exempted from paying the application fee.

Photograph Specifications: The candidate's photograph must be taken against a white or light-colored background. The file size must range between 4 KB and 12 KB, with a required resolution of 100 x 120 pixels in width and height.

Signature Specifications: The signature must be drawn with black or blue ink on a clean white sheet of paper. The scanned JPG image must be between 1 KB and 12 KB in size, maintaining a dimension resolution of 40 x 60 pixels.

The SSC Stenographer 2026 examination is structured across 2 main levels. The first level features an online computer-based objective test (MCQs) for Grades C and D, followed by a professional skill assessment conducted by the SSC.

a) The question paper will consist of objective-type multiple-choice questions set in both English and Hindi, except for the English Language and Comprehension section.

b) The SSC has implemented sectional timing rules, allocating 30 minutes for Parts 1 and 2, and 60 minutes for Part 3. 

c) A negative marking scheme applies, deducting 0.25 marks for each incorrect response. Candidates are advised to answer carefully keeping this penalization in mind.

SSC Stenographer Minimum Qualifying Marks

The minimum qualifying percentage thresholds required for the SSC Stenographer Computer-Based Examination are structured as follows:

• Unreserved Category: 30%
• OBC/EWS: 25%
• All Other Categories: 20%

Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates achieving the minimum qualifying marks specified by the Commission will be invited to appear for the Skill Test. The commission may also mandate sectional cut-offs for individual parts of the exam. The Skill Test is qualifying in nature, and specific passing standards are set by the Commission for various categories.

Shortlisted candidates must appear for a Stenography Skill Test. Candidates will receive a 10-minute dictation in English or Hindi at 100 words per minute (w.p.m.) for Grade 'C' and 80 w.p.m. for Grade 'D'. The dictated text must then be transcribed on a computer within the designated time limits.

Important Points:

• Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by the appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/ Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office, irrespective of the medium of the Skill Test of the candidate during the examination.
• The skill test will be held at the Commission’s Regional/Sub-Regional Offices or at other Centres (s) as may be decided by the Commission.
• Detailed instructions regarding the Skill Test will be sent by the concerned Regional/Sub-Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.
