For this recruitment cycle, IBPS has implemented structural changes to the Mains Exam Pattern. The objective section has been expanded from 145 questions to 170 questions, while the aggregate total marks remain fixed at 200. IBPS PO Preliminary Exam Pattern 2026

• The IBPS PO preliminary examination will be conducted online and candidates are allocated a total duration of 1 hour to complete the preliminary exam.
• It consists of 3 sections with a total of 100 questions and a maximum score of 100 marks.
• There is negative marking in IBPS PO preliminary exam, and 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer attempted by a candidate.
• It is necessary to clear the cut-off in all 3 sections to qualify for the IBPS PO Main exam.

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern 2026 (NEW)

Because the Mains exam dictates final merit weightage, it features an advanced blend of objective MCQs and a descriptive writing test. Overall, candidates face 172 questions carrying a total of 225 marks. Explore all structural details below.

• Descriptive Paper: Essay + Comprehension (25 marks, 30 minutes)
• Total objective duration: 160 minutes
• Total exam duration (including descriptive): 190 minutes (3 hrs 10 min)
• Negative marking of 0.25 marks applies to the objective test only
• There will be a penalty of 0.25 marks for wrong answers marked in the Objective Tests.

IBPS PO Descriptive Test

Mirroring the patterns seen in SBI PO exams, a descriptive writing test has been integrated into the IBPS PO 2026 mains exam. Candidates must successfully clear the minimum sectional cut-off in this descriptive paper for it to qualify for merit evaluation.

IBPS PO 2026 Interview Process

Candidates who successfully clear the Mains examination are invited to the final Interview process conducted by IBPS. The Interview carries a maximum weightage of 100 marks, with a qualifying threshold of 40% for general candidates, which is relaxed to 35% for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD category applicants.

Penalty for Wrong Answers:

A standard negative marking scheme applies to both the IBPS PO 2026 Preliminary and Mains exams, where 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrectly answered question. Unattempted questions or blanks will not incur any point penalties.

Final Selection

The ultimate selection of candidates for the Probationary Officer cadre is determined by calculating the combined performance score from the Mains Examination and the Interview process.
